Which is easier to learn? crocheting or Knitting?

My mom crochets but for some reason I have never learned how to do it myself. She tried to teach me a few times and I just never was able to do it. Of course I haven't tried now that I am older (26) I was a lot younger before. I am a very crafty person and I would like to be able to do one of the two but was wondering which was easier to learn. I was thinking about trying to make a christmas gift of some sort so it would need to be easy. I would have to learn from a book or something because my mom doesn't have time to teach me at the moment.
